Why Companies are Flocking to Flyover Country to Recruit UNK Grads

March 2019

Central 玉米视频 is home to many unique strengths. A healthy work ethic. Goodhearted people. So it鈥檚 only fitting that it鈥檚 also home to one of the nation鈥檚 only universities pumping out industrial distribution experts. The University of 玉米视频 at Kearney is filling a national pipeline with strong candidates for H3 鈥 high wage, high skill, high demand 鈥 technical sales and business management jobs.

Students in UNK鈥檚 industrial management program have their work cut out for them from day one. The demanding curriculum is tailored to meet today鈥檚 industry needs with the support of trade associations, distributors and manufacturers 鈥 who in turn participate in guest lectures and career fairs. Interacting with real business leaders doesn鈥檛 only build confidence; it builds essential early networking connections.

鈥淥ne of the biggest things the industrial distribution program provided for me was exposure to an abundance of very successful entrepreneurs and very successful salespeople and managers from companies large and small,鈥 said 2014 graduate Brett Douglas. 鈥淲e were getting to meet and interact with them on a professional level from our first semester in the program.鈥

Douglas is now the president and owner of Kearney Winnelson, a wholesale distributor of residential and commercial plumbing supplies.

鈥淭here aren鈥檛 a whole lot of other schools that are able to do what UNK is able to do with that program.鈥

鈥淯NK industrial distribution is a very well-respected program and a lot of the students who have come out of that program and become professionals in this field are really carrying their weight,鈥 Douglas said. 鈥淭here aren鈥檛 a whole lot of other schools that are able to do what UNK is able to do with that program.鈥

Like stocking a branch simulation lab with products donated by program partners, for example. Just one more unique offering of the major, in addition to a 12-week summer internship before graduation. It鈥檚 no wonder the program鈥檚 job placement rate is nearly 100 percent. And those students aren鈥檛 just staying in 玉米视频, either.

鈥淐ompanies fly over other Big Ten and Big 12 schools to get into little Kearney, 玉米视频, to hire our graduates,鈥 said lecturer and program coordinator Ben Brachle, who is also a UNK alumnus.

So while the program is making 玉米视频n industry stronger, it鈥檚 affecting change on a national scale as well. There aren鈥檛 many university systems that could support such an effort, but to the people who know what University of 玉米视频 has to offer, it just makes sense.
